  • VENEZUELA: CUBAN LEADER FIDEL CASTRO VISIT

Spanish/Nat XFA Cuban leader Fidel Castro has arrived in Venezuela to full military honours and controversy. Clad in his trademark green fatigues, Castro arrived for his five-day visit to cheers of "Long live Castro!" President Hugo Chavez has pleaded with Venezuelans to open their arms to Castro, his friend and political ally. But there's anger over Chavez's decision to offer the communist country cut-rate oil prices. The two leaders are to sign a pact on Monday providing Cuba with a reported 106-thousand barrels of Venezuelan oil daily on lenient credit terms and for barter. But while many turned out to greet the Cuban leader, many other - from union activists and opposition politicians to doctors, nurses and teachers - used Castro's visit to denounce Chavez's failure ...

Spanish/Nat The biggest shopping mall in Latin America has opened its doors in the Venezuelan capital, Caracas. The 200 (m) U-S dollar Sambil Centre rises over five storeys, spreads over more than 2.7 (m) million square feet and has parking for 4-thousand cars. But attempts to lobby public enthusiasm have been met with fierce criticism in a country where more than half the population is poor. A vast, multi-million U-S dollar high-tech commercial shopping centre dominates the skyline. Nothing unusual about that, except the location. This is Caracas, capital of Venezuela, where one in two live in poverty and austerity measures have forced a hike in taxation on luxury goods. The newly opened Sambil Centre - home to 466 stores, ten cinemas, 58 escalators, a bowling alley and an art museum - gives a very different impression. The centre stands in the affluent Chacao sector and, according to the project's mastermind Salomon Cohen has used modern technology throughout. SOUNDBITE: (Spanish) "We have a system of payment, for which a credit card will pay for all transactions, we have a system for parking, to pay for the parking with a credit card. There are many modern technological things which we have used here." SUPER CAPTION: Salomon Cohen, Mall owner A blaze of publicity heralded the centre's official opening last week, led by President Rafael Caldera and former Miss Venezuela, Verishka Ramirez. Work still continues, with a 15-hundred-seater amphitheatre and a 31-gallon (117-thousand litre) shark tank also planned. SOUNDBITE: (Spanish) "I think that it is interesting that people see in some way the new technology and the new innovations that have come about in Venezuela, and industry." SUPER CAPTION: VOXPOP SOUNDBITE: (Spanish) "It is the equivalent to any (mall) in the United States and I think that the shops are great but it is a shame they haven't been completed yet. They still need time to finish." SUPER CAPTION: VOXPOP SOUNDBITE: (Spanish) "Here, there is everything - you have to come here" SUPER CAPTION: VOXPOP For many Venezuelans, the Sambil Centre is overwhelmingly exclusive. Despite Venezuela's high poverty levels, confidence in future profits generated by the Sambil Centre runs high. Wealth generated by leading exports such as Venezuela's oil industry will ensure consumer demand. An estimated 70-thousand visitors are expected per day. Projects such as this, a joint US-Venezuelan venture, add to Venezuela's reputation as one of Latin America's most Americanised countries. SOUNDBITE: (Spanish) "It is like the malls in Miami, it is quite big, comfortable" SUPER CAPTION: VOXPOP SOUNDBITE: (Spanish) "Well, I think it will be like any other centre, only that this centre is really lovely, this has broken the record" SUPER CAPTION: VOXPOP You are more likely to find U-S style fast food here than arepas - the traditional corn pancakes. But there is some good news for ordinary Venezuelans. The 200 (m) million U-S dollar Sambil Centre is expected to create 10-thousand new jobs. Early elections demanded The latest wave of protests was triggered by a Supreme Court decision on 29 March to take over powers from the opposition-controlled National Assembly. The national government, through the central bank, is going to try to swap gold held as reserves for dollars to stay in power unconstitutionally,” said one letter sent Thursday to John Cryan, the CEO of Deutsche Bank. “I have the obligation to warn you that by supporting such a gold swap you would be taking actions favoring a government that’s been recognized as dictatorial by the international community.” However, every single law approved since then by the National Assembly has been blocked by the government of president Nicolás Maduro and by his cronies in the supreme court. On multiple occasions, opposition legislators Venezuelan consumer prices rose 700 percent while the economy contracted by 18.6 percent, according to preliminary central bank figures seen by Reuters, the sharpest contraction in 13 years and the worst inflation reading on record. The extended slump in oil prices has turned the OPEC nation's once-prosperous oil-boom economy into a mirror of the latter day Soviet Union, with rampant product shortages leading leaving to skip meals and wait hours in food lines. Venezuela's opposition-led congress has started publishing the country's inflation rate based on its own data collection, as the government of President Nicolas Maduro remains silent about the crisis-stricken nation's soaring consumer prices. But while many turned out to greet the Cuban leader, many other - from union activists and opposition politicians to doctors, nurses and teachers - used Castro's visit to denounce Chavez's failure to make good on promised pay rises. Jeering, whistling and waving signs that read "Fidel Get Out!" thousands marched through Caracas' congested streets, demanding that the aid for Cuba go to underpaid workers and creating jobs. In downtown Caracas, one banner read "Out With Fidel! We're dying of hunger." "We Want Work!" read another. Opposition legislators said they would walk out when Castro addresses Congress on Friday night. Fidel Castro and Chavez - who changed into camouflage fatigues and a green beret - then visited Cuban doctors working in towns like the hard-hit La Guaira along the Caribbean coast north of Caracas. The region was devastated in December by flooding and mudslides that killed an estimated 15-thousand people and left 100-thousand homeless. Cuba has sent 450 doctors and medical assistants to help. With dozens of security officers in pursuit, Chavez drove Castro in a Jeep Cherokee to an army command center in the disaster zone, where the two heads of state spoke with soldiers, doctors and victims and watched a film on continuing recovery efforts. Castro then was given the key to the hard-hit city of La Guaira, and six Cuban doctors who have worked there since December's disaster were given medals of honour. Castro defended his nation's relief efforts for La Guaira, saying it stemmed from Cuba's own state of poverty when he seized power on the island in 1959. Chavez insists that Cuba, suffering from a 40-year-old economic embargo imposed by the United States, will pay for the oil by sending more doctors to Venezuela, helping to develop tourism and sending advisers to help the South American country's ailing sugar industry. This video captures the dramatic scene. A journalist at the scene said the National Guard (GNB) deployed tear gas without warning, even after opposition leaders made attempts to speak to police and negotiate passage for the marchers. Venezuelan opposition leaders also said security forces launched tear gas at protesters in front of an elementary school in Caracas on Wednesday, impacting children there. Wednesday’s protests were part of ongoing demonstrations against President Nicholas Maduro and his administration, whom the opposition say is trying to evade new elections amid a severe economic crisis. Recent protests have led to more than 20 deaths, prompting accusations of police brutality and violent protest suppression tactics by the National Guard.

Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro denounced the newly imposed sanctions by the United States on Venezuela, speaking in Caracas, Friday. Maduro said they were a part of an economical coup. "These decisions affect us, which cause us great financial, economic and energy damage. Because these measures hurt Venezuela. They cause us harm. They are part of an economic coup," he said. The Venezuelan leader also added, "Can the world accept that [the US] threatens to choke, suffocate, a country by its desire and by its strength to be a noble, dignified, free and independent country? It can not be accepted. We can not accept it." White House announced fresh financial sanctions on the oil-rich nation, Friday, leading to an increase in tensions between the two countries. The sanctions prohibit financial institutions from providing new money to the Venezuelan government or state oil company PDVSA. Trump recently said he would not rule out military intervention in Venezuela after Maduro introduced a controversial new Constituent Assembly last month. Venezuela's former chief prosecutor Luisa Ortega Diaz was sped away on the backseat of a motorbike after finding some 30 national guardsmen blocking her entrance to the public prosecutor's office in Caracas, Saturday. Government forces wearing riot gear surrounded the entrance to Ortega's headquarters, preventing her from entering the building where her office is situated. The guards were stationed outside of the office ahead of the first regular session of the newly selected National Constituent Assembly, where a unanimous vote decided that Ortega would be stripped of her title. Credit: Instagram/yeyebe4 Security forces used tear gas to disperse demonstrators in Caracas, Venezuela, on April 10, in the fourth round of protests in the crisis-hit country in the past 10 days. This footage, geotagged to the central Caracas neighborhood of El Rosal, shows a crowd fleeing as tear gas bangs are heard in the background. El Nacional reported that protesters responded to the gas by throwing stones at Bolivarian National Guard forces, while BBC News reported that 18 metro stations and 20 bus routes had been suspended due to the clashes and commotion in the streets. Protests have been held in Caracas since last week against the Venezuelan Supreme Court’s March 30 decision to strip power from the opposition-controlled National Assembly. The Supreme Court has since withdrawn the ruling, but the move drew criticism and condemnation from Venezuelan opposition politicians and international governments alike.
